Metadata provides descriptive information about a resource. They are "data that provide information about other data" but not the content of the data themselves. Metadata are important for data harmonization and necessary for understanding the data. They provide information such as the type of data, content, source and method of acquisition, quality, format, structure, and accessibility.
DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a system used to uniquely and permanently identify digital documents, such as scientific articles, reports, and other types of publications and datasets. The DOI allows resources to be easily found and precisely cited in academic and scientific works.
IPMA has entered into a protocol with FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.) which, as a member of the DataCite Registration Agency and the national registration agency for DOI identifiers, delegates to IPMA the assignment of unique identifiers to its datasets and publications.
