IPMA launches digital platform WEAREATLANTIC for the provision of oceanographic data
The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere, I.P. (IPMA) has taken a significant step towards promoting marine research and providing crucial data to the scientific and public communities. Through the "Atlantic Observatory - Data and Monitoring Infrastructure" Project, IPMA has implemented the digital platform WEAREATLANTIC.

The WEAREATLANTIC platform was designed as a repository of high-quality oceanographic data to facilitate the storage, access, and interoperability of geographic data and spatial information about the marine environment. Its goal is to foster research, monitoring, and the provision of data on the Atlantic basin.
Aligned with the guidelines of the funding entity, the EEA Grants, WEAREATLANTIC represents IPMA's commitment to providing accurate and reliable information about the marine environment and ensuring the integrity, perpetuity, and interoperability of these data, which are essential for understanding and preserving the ocean.
WEAREATLANTIC adopts the FAIR Principle (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), ensuring that the data are easily found, accessed, understood, and used by all stakeholders. Additionally, WEAREATLANTIC will feed, from the metadata catalog, other platforms with legal responsibilities in geographic data repositories, such as the National Geographic Information System (under the General Directorate of Territory), the digital platform dados.gov (under the Agency for Administrative Modernization, I.P.), and the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC-PT), which will expand the information base available to scientists and society in general.
With ambitious plans for expansion and continuous updates to incorporate new data from sensors and equipment acquired by the institute, IPMA demonstrates its commitment to maintaining WEAREATLANTIC as a cutting-edge tool, meeting the constantly evolving needs of the scientific community and the general public. This launch marks the beginning of a new era in marine research in Portugal.
